Take Action: Running Out of Time Relay Race
Take Climate Action! Join hundreds of schools across the country to participate in a nationwide relay race. Together with other learners from your school, create a strong climate action message that will be delivered by WESSA to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27!
The relay race will happen over 3 weeks in October and supports the world’s largest relay race, Running Out of Time!
Carry the baton for climate action by following these steps:
Step 1: Register your school
Registration can be done online. Entry and relay race date must be confirmed via email. If you’re not a WESSA Eco-School, you can register online.
Step 2: Create a strong message to support climate action and education
Your school’s Eco-committees will select one of the following themes and create a strong message related to that theme. The three themes are Renewable Energy, Climate Change Education in Curriculum and Zero Waste in Schools.
Step 3: Get active and send your climate action message
Organise your relay-run during your participation week (see dates below). The race can take place on school grounds and there should be at least four relay teams. The winning team will present your climate action message in a ‘’Memorandum of Demands’’ format to your school leadership at a handover ceremony.
Step 4: Send your climate action message to COP27
Share your message and photos of your relay race and handover ceremony with WESSA via email. All the messages received will be distilled into five messages and physically delivered to COP27 on 6 November by WESSA’s Head of Education and Training, Ms Cindy-Lee Cloete.
Step 5: Take your message to district level
Encourage your principal to discuss the memorandum at district level
