ON PLACEMENT IN GERMANY

My work with KOSA e.V. focused mainly in outreach and awareness raising, through presentations at schools, public events(fair-trade), and climate camps; project administration and implementation; Desk research and report writing; Project administration and Implementation And facilitated project of Welthaus Bielefeld at schools in the framework “Modellregion Schulen fur Globales Lernen OWL(Ostwestfalen-Lippe) (“Regional Education schools for global learning “) to implement global learning firmly into the school profile and school curricula.

BACK HOME AS A MULTIPLIER

Exchange experience made me realize the benefits of volunteering and remain active in addressing our community needs, And after my stay in Germany I volunteered to introduce a school partnership program between schools from eMalahleni with German schools and find schools that have interest to participate in the program. Currently we have three schools from eMalahleni that are matched with German partner schools, I’m coordinating the school partnership here in eMalahleni. Through assisting the schools initiate and implement the program at their schools, develop school projects and activities that address SDG’s through ESD and Global learning. Is important to implement the schools’ partnership programme at schools here in eMalahleni, As “Learners, learn to understand global connectivity through direct personal experience” and gives recognition to the need of “possibility to include practical topics of global citizenship in school curricula”. Also eMalahleni is one of the highly concentrated industrial area in South Africa, that needs sustainable development plans and initiatives to address all forms of pollution that burden the communities, in building safe and sustainable communities.

“Preparations for volunteers from South Africa needs to be improved and should be planned together with former volunteers (Alumni’s), to use experience in avoiding recurring challenges that are similar for volunteers abroad.”

CURRENT CHALLENGES

To be a multiplier

FUNDING & SUPPORT

The lack of funding and resources to develop, initiate and implement school project ideas as well as the limitations to do proper profiling and reporting makes the work as a multiplier very challenging.

In October 2019, we applied for the AGYI-IF and in November our proposal was successful and granted to do workshops at the three schools we work with that participate in the school partnership program with German schools. Aim of the workshops was to train 10 learners from each school 30 in total, on SDG’s and AU Agenda 2063, Global and Active citizenship and Education for Sustainable Development. The trainings were done virtually and facilitated by My Voice a program of Engage SA NPC, the program is about youth leadership course. After the trainings participants were encouraged to initiate school and community projects focusing on women/girls empowerment and Climate action campaigns since we live in a coal mining communities.

Despite having the challenge that came unexpected of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we managed to train and have an impact on the participants.

Currently I’m assisting the learners who were encouraged and motivated by the training outcomes based on what they have learnt to start campaigns and develop project ideas inline with SDG’s focusing on the topics of Gender Equality, Building Sustainable Communities and Climate Action, but having to initiate it has been challenging for them since they have a lot of school work to cover before end of the year, because learners missed a lot as a results of schools being suddenly closed for about three months in response to the National Disaster COVID-19 management plan.

Through the AGYI-IF we managed to develop a website which is www.tomorrowpeople.co.za to share activities within our program of the schools partnership.

To do the work I’m doing and trying to empower and impact youth in school I’m motivated by the quote that says, “If you want to get something done, do it yourself and don’t wait for others to do it for you” and the one that says “Be the change you want to see”
